Geothermal Pilot Opens in Kajmárok, Slovakia

The town of Kajmárok in eastern Slovakia has officially launched the trial operation of a geothermal well. The 2.5-kilometer-deep geothermal well, drilled on the Juh property, has begun supplying heat to nearby homes and apartments, potentially covering 1,500 households as well as the adjacent school and kindergarten.

"Producing electricity in Slovakia is good for us, and it is equally important that we also look for other sources of energy self-sufficiency. Slovakia has great potential in the field of geothermal energy and I am glad that they were able to utilize this potential in Kajmárok, and the mayor should certainly be thanked for that,"Energy Minister Denisa Saková said at the launch of the geothermal well.

Drilling of geothermal wells began in February 2022 and was completed in May of the same year. The city initially intended to start the project on its own and even set up a company consisting of a team of experts. However, the project could not start due to lack of funding. Obtaining financial support from banks or the State was also difficult, as no exploration wells had previously been drilled in Kaji Marok.

Eventually, the city announced a commercial competition to sell the company. A private company drilled the well at a cost of approximately €3 million. After the well is tested, the entire surrounding area will be remodeled to include an outdoor fitness area, benches, bike parking racks, and informational signs about the importance of the project to the community.

"Our long-term endeavor at the 2019 Kaji Marok Enviromeste is to reduce environmental pollution and find alternative ways of providing the necessities of life. Today, these also include electricity production and thermal energy production. Through the implementation of geothermal wells, the city has acquired a renewable energy source for heating and hot water preparation. We are one of the top cities in Slovakia investing in our own renewable energy utilization, making us more independent from external sources,"Ján Ferencák, Mayor of Kéří Marok, said.
